A novel endoscopic examination of the small intestine: Double-balloon enteroscopy

The small intestine has been a black box for endoscopic examination for a long time, because any instrument to examine the entire area has not been established.
Dr. Matsumoto (The Second Department of Internal Medicine) introduced a double-balloon enteroscopy for this purpose. This method is characterized by an endoscope and an overtube with two balloons as shown in the figure. The balloon at the tip of the scope or the overtube is inflated alternatively while the other instrument is inserted. Physician can observe local lesions inside the small intestine using a video monitor. By means of the procedure, polyps can be removed and bleeding can be stopped. Dr.. Matsumoto has experienced more than a hundred patients and has become familiar with this method now. He says “patients are satisfied with the examination because it can diagnose small intestinal tumor correctly”.
