Good News to Patients with Autoimmune Disease
Autoimmune disease(ADs) are sometimes resistant to conventional therapy. Prof.Harada of Department of Internal Medicine Ⅰ has utilized hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT) in an attempt to treat them by resetting the immune system. Treatment outcome is encouraged with substantial improvement of QOL(quality of life) in 7 patients with systemic sclerosis and other ADs. Hematopoietic stem cells in peripheral blood are collected from patients, and cryopreserved until use. After treating patients with very high-dose of an immunosuppressive drug (cyclophosphamide), patients are infused with frozen-thawed stem cells; autoreactive lymphocytes are eradicated and newly developed lymphocytes reconstitute the immune system normally. Prof.Harada named this new treatment modalify as “immune system reset therapy.”
