We have demonstrated that SIRT1, a longevity gene, inhibits the expression of angiotensin II type 1 receptor. Furthermore the same effect can be observed with resveratrol, a polyphenol contained in red wine, which activates SIRT1. We also found that resveratrol suppresses hypertension induced by angiotensin II. Our ongoing research is investigating the roles of SIRT1 and the effects of resveratrol on blood vessels and atherosclerosis.

Over expression of SIRT1 by an adenovirus vector in vascular smooth muscle cells lowers the expression of AT1 receptor in a concentration-dependent manner

Mst1 is a serine/ threonine kinase involved in the determination of the number of cells in the development and apoptosis. Overexpression of Mst1 in smooth muscle cells has been shown to induce apoptosis. Recently Mst1 has been reported to be related to aging and oxidative stress. From these viewpoints also, we are investigating the function of Mst1 in blood vessels.
