My name is Masato Kanemaki, and I am honoured to have been appointed Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the School of Medicine, Kyushu University, on October 1, 2026.

I received my Ph.D. from Chiba University in March 2001 and spent the following five years as a postdoctoral researcher at Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute in the UK. In 2006, I joined the School of Science at Osaka University as an Assistant Professor. In 2010, I established my own laboratory at National Institute of Genetics as a tenure-track Associate Professor, and then I was appointed Professor at the same institute in 2016.

My research has focused on the mechanisms of DNA replication and chromosome maintenance in human cells, alongside the development of technologies for rapid protein degradation within cells. Although DNA replication is sometimes regarded as a classical field of research, studying human cells with the latest technologies reveals molecular mechanisms that differ from those found in extensively studied model organisms such as E. coli and yeast. For me, the excitement and promise of research lie in building on decades of accumulated knowledge while using new technologies to uncover previously unknown mechanisms.

I believe that the key to advancing research lies in combining tradition with innovation. Building on the distinguished traditions of the School of Medicine at Kyushu University, I hope to bring fresh perspectives and pursue fundamental research of international significance. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead a laboratory here, and I am committed to contributing to the School's continued development through research and education, while nurturing the next generation of scientists and medical professionals.

I look forward to working with you and would be grateful for your guidance and support.
