Legionella : A pathogenic bacterium only in civilized countries

A bacterium called Legionella is currently noticed because it causes fatal pneumonia to those who took filtration-circulation bath in Japan. Legionella can grow intracellularly in free-living amoeba that present in soil and fresh water, especially in man-made water facilities. This ability could lead Legionella organisms to proliferate in human pulmonary macrophages after being inhaled into lungs as aerosols. To grow intracellularly in amoeba and macrophages, Legionella have acquired novel machinery to inject effecter molecule into target cells and subsequently form a space to proliferate inside.
